The Harsh Vérité of Secret Dreams

...Or the life and works of David Firth. Anyone who has been online for a span is likely to have encountered the work of David Firth, particularly his "Salad Fingers" series of cartoons. Firth's work have an unnerving, dream-like quality, surreal in the truest sense of the word. They are filled with images of bodily corruption, the madness of contemporary social mores, and the latent perverseness of human temperament. None of it makes any sense, but there is something chillingly relatable, in it. Firth's work is like a mish-mash of Edgar Allan Poe, Tim Burton, and William S. Burroughs.

I invite you to experience some of Firth's choicest bits:

Three Skins Without Men

The Original "Salad Fingers"

And an interview with the artist.

  1. I recently found out about Salad Fingers from this:

    Teens React to Salad Fingers

It's one of those episodes from the "Teens React" series, which are usually pretty entertaining. There's a "Kids React" and an "Elders React" series worth watching too.

I find the Salad Fingers voice more creepy than any of the visuals!

The Three Skins Without Men video was weird for me because I felt almost like I was understanding what was going on but not really. There were a few funny parts, but the way they're sprinkled in makes me feel almost sick for finding them funny! Just as I'd be laughing at some of the dialogue, something terrible would happen. It keeps you on edge.

When they mentioned in that "Teens React" video that one of David Firth's inspirations is David Lynch, I wondered why. I can see it now, because there's so much mysterious, unexplained symbolism in his videos. It might just be mystery for mystery's sake with no meaning. What meaning did you get from the Three Skins video? Salad Fingers feels like a walk in the park after watching that. :)

I watched the interview with David Firth and he wasn't at all what I expected. I'm not sure what I expected, really. He was personable. I was glad to hear him say that there was supposed to be a comedic element to his work.

Firth's work reminded me of this video:

    Why are things creepy?

His work is creepy because it's "off" and we don't completely understand it. I think his Three Skins video falls into that "uncanny valley" category.

  2. I'd totally forgotten about Salad Fingers! How I enjoyed those episodes, thank you for the flashback.

What an interesting mind this man has - I think I'd like to get in there, but not for more than a couple of minutes. I'd probably be forever tormented with nightmares.
